twenty-four
by brent engle

twenty-four years ago
I poked my head in at this world
decided to stick it out
for awhile

in so many years you'd think
I learned a lesson or few about life
settled down with some kids and a wife

but hey man that ain't me
this town's gotta name for me now

put your age before beauty
put your mind before matter
and then please put me out of your mind

and twenty-four more years from now
I hope it won't be so damn hard
to look myself in the eyes

the years will press on through
and mom will say I'm still her boy
with that little boy look on my face

but hey mom that ain't me
this man has long since changed that boy

put your age before beauty
put your mind before matter
and then please put me out of your mind

and twenty-four more years from now
I hope it won't be so damn hard
to look myself in the eyes
